October is World Hunger Action Month (WHAM), celebrated by Stop Hunger Now to raise awareness about hunger and to empower local communities to help create a world without hunger. World Hunger Action Month activities aim to actively engage and empower communities by providing opportunities to make a difference through volunteering, advocacy, or donating on behalf of the world’s hungry.
Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa will be rounding off WHAM with a closing event on
1 November 2014 at the Kenilworth Centre in Cape Town where more than 350 volunteers will package 39 000 meals over 5 sessions from 8:30am until 4pm.
The event co-incides with Kenilworth Centre’s 39th birthday, and some of your favourite Smile 90.4FM presenters will join the volunteers. Smile 90.4FM will also be broadcasting live from the Centre Court from 10am to 2pm. Together with the packaging, there will be a donations drive on the day, where shoppers can pledge a donation of R10 or more and receive a tasty cookie specially baked by the team at Khayelitsha Cookies, a social enterprise creating employment among women in Cape Town’s largest township.
