A class act – Matrics 2014!

The long wait is over…

The West Coast District has achieved the highest pass rate in the Western Cape with 88.4%; Herschel Girls School took top honours in Excellence in Academic Performance and Yi-tin Michelle Yuan from Rustenberg Girls High is the shiniest star of them all. The Western Cape Education Department today released the results of the 2014 National Senior Certificate examinations at Leeuwenhof, premier Helen Zille’s official residence in Cape Town.

Education MEC Debbie Schäfer calls it a “day of celebration”. “I am especially proud that the Western Cape is the only province in the country where all eight education districts have achieved a pass rate of over 80%.”

A special mention was made of the Metropole East District which has historically delivered the poorest matric results of all eight districts.  Schäfer announced that this district, together with Metro South, achieved a pass rate of 81.2% – an increase of more than 15 percent since 2009.

“The most noteworthy thing for me was that, despite the fact that these schools are in areas plagued by very difficult circumstances, they have managed to turn things around.”

Premier Helen Zille who announced the province’s Top Ten Matrics, believes the Western Cape’s education successes can be attributed to a sustained and concerted effort by all role-players.
