The generosity of Capetonians has enabled a local aid organisation to feed and clothe hundreds of needy Western Cape learners on the eve of the new school year.
Shiloh Food and Relief which provides 63-thousand meals to underprivileged families every month, started a donation drive for learners, especially those from informal settlements. Estelle Veldman, Shiloh’s spokesperson, told Smile 90.4FM that the need has never been greater after a number of fires over the last couple of months: “Thousands of families have lost all their possessions, including school uniforms and stationery”.
Thanks to Estelle and her colleagues, and the thousands of donations from caring Capetonians, most parents affected by the blazes will be able to put a proper meal on the table before their kids start the new year.
On Wednesday more than one million Western Cape learners will return to school. 109 000 of those are Grade One’s embarking on what will hopefully be a successful 12 years.
