Day of Reconciliation

It’s more than an opportunity to throw a tjoppie on the fire or hang out at the beach. Nothing wrong with that of course but do spare a thought for the significance of this day – one of the most important on the South African calendar. Day of Reconciliation, celebrated since 1994, is a reminder to all of us that unity is the glue keeping us together.

Although most businesses will be closed, the city centre will be abuzz with the sound of music…The ever-green Cape Minstrels will be performing tomorrow in the so-called “Karnival Voorsmakie” – a preview of what’s to come over New Year’s. Guaranteed lekker local entertainment, kicking off at Keizergracht at 12pm.

It is believed that the first carnival troupe was organised in 1887.
