“It was one of the most special moments of my life”.
Veteran journalist and political commentator Max du Preez remembers 11 February 1990 as if it were yesterday. “I remember sitting there, watching his release on television and that tremendous feeling of relief and joy flowing over me that apartheid was now ending and that this special man whom I then believed would be the Moses that would lead us out of the desert, was now walking free”.
Du Preez had many memorable encounters with Nelson Mandela, one being shortly after his release.
“Four days after he was released Mandela invited me for tea at his home in Soweto.” Smiling, Du Preez continues: “He spoke to me in Afrikaans and gave me bad tea – too milky and too sweet like he had in jail”.
