“They tell me it’s a place of new beginnings…”
Manfred Jacobs, spokesperson at Groot Drakenstein, the former Victor Verster prison, escorted Smile 90.4FM on a tour of the world famous prison, where Nelson Mandela spent the last couple of years of his incarceration.
Jacobs says the massive Mandela statue erected outside the gates, is a huge tourist attraction, as is the house where Mandela spent the last days of his imprisonment. More than 40 000 have walked through these gates since the 11th of February 1990.
To a question whether Madiba’s stay at Victor Verster has had any effect on those left behind bars, the answer was a definitive “yes”: “When Mandela walked out of the prison that Sunday afternoon, the prison changed forever. I see it on a daily basis – prisoners aspiring to break away from their old ways and follow in Madiba’s footsteps, by doing good for others.”
