Girl Power Anthems

1s@1 Music Poll: And the greatest girl power anthem ever is …

If you had to pick one iconic girl power anthem to toast Women’s Day 2014 and all of fabulous female kind, what would it be?

We had a big  fun brainstorm about it and came to the conclusion that you cannot celebrate womanhood without spinning at least one of these records – listed here in chronological order:

[poll id=”4″]

Are there any essential songs not on the list? If you think so, do drop us a comment.

And if you’re still confused about what girl power is really all about, let these Disney princesses enlighten you:

Naturally, all males of the species are invited to vote too. We know girl power anthems are thoroughly enjoyed by most boys:

There was a lot of debate here at Smile headquarters about what ten tracks to put on the polling list. One recent monster hit we never considered though, was “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke. It was, after all, a song that annoyed a number of women and inspired some really biting and explicit feminist parodies on YouTube. The latest viral “Blurred Line” spoof, however, is all about the power of good grammar and spelling, and seeing as there’s no official video of Weird Al Yankovic’s classic “Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch” parody, here’s “Word Crimes” from his new #1 album – (just for) Mandatory Fun:

No wonder I resonate with Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” … 1966 was a good year 😉 …and it seems that them boots are walkin’ all over the competition… Keep Walkin’ Boots 😉

A great year for pop for sure. And those boots were indeed made for walking but right now it seems the Spice Girls are walking all over everybody. But a lot can change till Friday, right?

How about “Sister’s are doing it for themselves” by Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin? I remember the girl power music video with leading female world figures. And “She’s works hard for her money” by the Pointer Sisters

Hi Camillah, Donna Summer would definitely have been a good candidate. But “Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves” is on the list. You can vote for it by clicking next to the title and then clicking “vote” below the list.
