Describing Motown in one word is a challenge. Just watch how these well-known musicians struggled to find the right word to sum up their awe for the record label founded by Berry Gordy in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan:
Few would disagree with Suzi Quatro though that the word “magic” would be more than appropraite when it comes to the music phenomenon that made the world dance and gave us Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, to name but a few.
The UK had a big poll this year to determine “The Nation’s Favourite Motown Song”. Marvin Gaye came out tops with “I Heard it Through the Grapvine”, but here at Smile Central we find it quite hard to decide what our most coveted soulful Motown pop confection is.
