Smile Breakfast Helps Give The Gift of Life

The Easter long weekend is traditionally the busiest weekend on the Western Cape’s roads, and has become a time of year with a sharp increase in road accidents. Every year the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service urges all those who are able to, to donate blood to ensure that they are fully stocked for the anticipated demand ahead of the holiday period. Michelle Vermeulen from the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service explained that the organization relies entirely on assistance from the public to ensure that they meet these demands.“The Western Cape is particularly low on O- and B+ and O+ blood type supplies and we encourage all residents, who meet the basic criteria, to become a blood donor at their nearest blood donor clinic.”

Smile Breakfast’s Bobby & Lindy decided to help the staff at the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service boost their much needed supply by running the Smile Breakfast Blood Drive. What initially started out as a project for Smile 90.4 FM presenters and staff, turned into successful day of listeners and Capetonians working in the area heading to the Smile 90.4FM studios to donate blood and give the gift of life.

After hearing about Bobby & Lindy’s plans to help the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service, the Smile Breakfast team received many enquiries from listeners and businesses on how they could get involved. Bobby & Lindy then happily invited them to the studios to meet the team and be part of the Smile Breakfast Blood Drive.

On the morning of the project a total of 43 people visited the Smile Breakfast Blood Drive to become a donor, which equates to 129 potential lives saved with blood donations.

If you were not able to take part in this project this week and would like to become a blood donor, find your nearest donor centre here: www.wpblood.org.za
