Veterinarian Dr Reena Cotton signs up as a #PawMember

Published on

On the 27th of March Mdzananda launched its largest campaign yet. The “Become a #PawMember campaign” came about after receiving news that Mdzananda’s largest funder is withdrawing their funding.

“Today we are very excited to release the second video of our campaign. The video is an interview with the renowned Dr Reena Cotton, owner and veterinarian at Vetpoint in Sea Point,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Manager. “Dr Cotton heard about our funding loss and committed herself to signing up at a Paw Member donating R100 per month.”

The animal clinic’s campaign aims to sign up 3000 Paw Members, each donating R100 per month to cover their funding deficit. Due to the economic situation in Europe and budget cuts, Mdzananda’s main funder has deducted their funding by 64% in this financial year.  For the duration of three years (2017-2019) their funding will be reduced yearly until full extraction at the start of 2020, taking with them a yearly donation of 2.2 million rand.

“I have a very special passion for welfare and I have been associated with Mdzananda and supporting them for at least 15 to 18 years,” says Dr Cotton. “I support Mdzananda because it does a wonderful job in a community which might not otherwise have access to pet care, they go out to the community educating people on looking after animals, they do a wonderful job sterilizing and treating animals.

When I heard that they need 3000 Paw Members, I signed up. We created a video to express my commitment visually as I want to encourage more people to do the same. We can all spare one meal out per month and instead donate R100 per month to Mdzananda.”

Within the first two weeks of the campaign 200 sign ups were made. “We are very happy with the results of the campaign so far. 200 is a fantastic number and we are so grateful for each and every person that has signed up. It is, however, still a long way to go from the 3000 sign ups we require,” says du Plessis.
