Biohacking? You can do it too

Biohacking sounds scary, but apparently it’s exactly the kind of thing a lot of people are trying at home. Because biohacking, as the name suggests, is all about amateur scientists messing around with biotech – like implants under the skin that can communicate with smart devices. DIY biotech is not about creating Frankenstein, biologist Prof Ellen Jorgensen insists. We have personal computing, why not personal biotech? That’s the question she and her colleagues asked themselves before opening Genspace, a nonprofit DIY bio lab in Brooklyn devoted to citizen science, where amateurs can go and tinker with biotechnology.
